SHRM CAFÉ: “BLENDED LEARNING” IN BUSINESS

Education is one of the most important job for people in charge of Human Resources. At the same time, year-ending is the time that most enterprises are preparing for training plan for the next year. Ever before, people tend to think of classroom-based learning with instruction from the instructors when it comes to training. Besides some advantages, there are some disadvantages such as the logistics, learning time, training cost, limit for continuous learning,…

In the industrial revolution 4.0, with the support of foundation online, enterprises are transforming traditional learning into blended learning. This can be seen as our future of learning, which will develop in the next few years.

In order to accompany HR in this story, on this October 16th ,2019, PACE institute of management and SHRM VietNam organized this periodic SHRM Café event with the topic “Blended Learning”. The event was contributed by Ms Nguyen Minh Ngoc who is HRBP Manager and in charge of training from SchneiderElectric VietNam, with many other HR communities from many incorporations and enterprises around the country.

At the beginning, participants together figured out the definition of “Blended Learning”. There are many opinions, for example Blended Learning is classroom-based learning and online-based learning, many tools and ways are used when learning at school such as video, role-playing, gamification, some activities which accompany the learners such as training, mentoring and feedback…This combination generally aimed at optimizing the learning value, enhancing the competency and helping the organization to reach the target.

Blended learning has many advantages, you can tell the saving cost and time; diverse and interesting learning method which are suitable for young employees keen on using technology; comfortable and flexible learning environment; it can be arranged for a large number of learners to participate; there are tools to follow and report the employees’ learning result.

Furthermore, participants also talked about some disadvantages of this learning method: to apply this blended learning effectively, enterprises need to have human resources and infrastructure; learners have less motivation when learning online than learning directly; the demands of training from employees from each departments are different, so how to set up an e-learning program which can be applied by many departments…

At the end of the event, we shared the ADDIE model (Analysis – Design – Developmet – Implementation – Evaluation), which is 5 steps to do some training activities in general and blended learning activities in particular. Analysis and Design stages are very important, which decide the relevance of the next activities.

In the analysis and design stage: the planner can approach in 3 directions: bottom-up, top-down and from the incorporation/area.
  • Bottom-up: at the end of the year, the management team will evaluate employees, figure out the competency gap, then build a Individual Development Plan (IDP) for each individual and find out the training demand. All the training demand will be represented and considered/accepted in the leadership meeting.
  • Top-down: what is the focused/strategic objective of the enterprises for this year? Then analyze and draw the conclusion of what you need to train your employees.
  • From incorporation/area: If you want to follow the trend of market (take information from who has a lot of experiences and knowledge about training), which do you need to train?

To do ADDIE well, HR needs to join with relevant department (line managers, employees, leaders). Besides, they can join with some outside resources (about training-demand analyzing service, solutions/ training experts…) to have optimal blended-learning strategy.

SHRM Vietnam hopes that through this event and connection of SHRM Café, participants will gain more useful knowledge and practical lessons, which can be applied to their daily work as professional HR specialists.
